the summer camp

The Summer Camp is School of Data’s flagship event, designed to build the next generation of data literacy experts. Held annually since 2014, the event aims to foster collaboration between the various individuals and organisations that School of Data works with: our network members, fellows & data experts, and partners. Through peer-learning activities, focused presentations and creative workshops, we reflect and iterate on the various strategies developed around the world to increase the level of data literacy within civil society and strengthen the data literacy ecosystem.

For the first time, with the support of the Data Collaboratives for Local impact program (DCLI), the 2017 Summer Camp will be opened up to a select number of individuals and groups selected by our partners. We are delighted to be welcoming them to learn on-site from the best trainers of the School of Data network. During the last two days of the Summer Camp, participants will take part in the Summer Camp's Open Training, an intensive series of activities split across two tracks:

  • The "Data Basics" track: focused on first-time learners.
  • The "Training of trainers" track: where experienced data trainers will collaborate on finding and documenting new solutions to commonproblems.

Some workshops will be open for remote participation, allowing the broader data literacy community to contribute to Summer Camp's key outcomes: the workshop database and the guide for trainers.

The Summer Camp's Open Training is supported by DCLI, a unique partnership between the United States President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) to support innovative approaches to ensure evidence-based decision-making for programs and policies that address HIV/AIDS, global health, gender equality and economic growth in Sub-Saharan Africa.

  agenda

Day 1: Discovery activities

The first day will focus on introductory activities. Members of the School of Data network will have the opportunity to learn more about each other’s activities during the past year and new members will be introduced.

Note: the first three days are reserved for School of Data network members and invited partners.

Day 2: Strategy & peer-exchange

The second day focuses on workshops dedicated to assess and iterate on current strategies for data literacy. While Members of the network will focus on the strategy of the overall network, Partners will work with Fellows and Experts on the specific activities remaining until the end of their respective programmes. Peer-exchange activities will take place during the afternoon.

Note: the first three days are reserved for School of Data network members and invited partners.

Day 3: Strategy & problem-solving

Activities on day will be similar to day 2. Afternoon activities will focus on finding and documenting creative solutions to improve the coordination and outputs of School of Data’s network work.

Note: the first three days are reserved for School of Data network members and invited partners.

Day 4: Open Training Day 1

During the morning, participants will get to learn about the projects and activities of members of the School of Data community, in order to better understand the 'behind the scenes' of data projects.

Training activities will start in full during the afternoon, with participants split into two tracks: members of the « Data Basics » track will be introduced to data projects through School of Data’s Data Pipeline; members of the « Training of trainers » track will be introduced to School of Data’s research on capacity building strategies and will have the opportunity to provide feedback and inform future research.

Day 5: Open Training Day 2

For the second day of the open training, members of the « Data Basics » track will take part in a data expedition, which is a workshop format created by School of Data which allows learning through hands-on practice.

Members of the « Training of Trainers » track will work together to identify problems common to data literacy capacity building, and document existing and potential solutions to these problems. This documentation will form the first version of the open source guide for data literacy trainers.

  Remote Participation

A document will soon be available with more details of the sessions, including information on the ones which will allow remote participation. If you want to receive Summer Camp documentation by email, including slides, session summaries and reminders of remote participation sessions, click here.

  Resources

We strive to make Summer Camp useful for participants but also for the wider community. The School of Data’s Guide for Data Literacy Trainers will be created and improved regularly during future Summer Camps. Additionally, for the first time we are publishing a Database of workshop documentation that will allow anyone to reuse the workshop formats used across the School of Data community.
